Online GIS courses - GIS distance learning

The Pennsylvania State University, USA, offers a master of geographic information systems (MGIS). The degree at  is designed for working professionals aspiring to leadership positions in the field and wishing to pursue a world-class master's degree online.

The Lund University, Sweden offers an Internet-based Masters in Geographical Information Systems - GIS  (distance learning), except for the presentation and defence of the final thesis.

ITC in Enschede, the Netherlands, offers an online course on Principles of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The course introduces the participant to the basic concepts and the operational skills necessary for data entry, data manipulation and analysis, and production of interpretable output. The course is useful for both the novice to GIS and the one experienced in some aspects but missing the complete overview of the state-of-the-art and/or the conceptual foundation.

UNIGIS is a worldwide network of educational institutions which offer distance learning courses in GIS. Institutions within the UNIGIS network offer internationally recognised qualifications for GIS professionals and those seeking to enter the field.

The University of Leeds, UK offers a new and innovative on-line MSc programme in Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The overall aim of the programme is to provide open distance learning for people working in local enterprise or public sector organisations who require core training and skills development in Geographical Information Systems, or for students who want to study in their own environment and in their own time.

 

The Birkbeck, University of London offers a Geographic Information Science (GISc) by Distance Learning (MSc) for those having some practical knowledge of one or more GI technologies, and who need a deeper understanding of spatial theory, a wider technological knowledge, new perspectives on the social and political context of spatial data and insights into the process of organisational/ societal decision-making with spatial data. The degree is taught via the Internet, using WebCT to provide lecture/review materials, email to deliver coursework/ feedback and an organised Internet chat message board to converse with lecturers and other students.

The Department of Geomatics at the University of Melbourne has developed a GIS self learning tool to enhance teaching of GIS in the Department of Geomatics. The modules cover a range of subjects that expose students to both introductory and advanced concepts in GIS.”

ESRI Training and education courses

UNIGIS is a network of universities co-operating in the design and delivery of part-time distance-learning in GIS. The UNIGIS programme was founded in 1990 and currently includes sites in thirteen countries.The University of Huddersfield, Manchester Metropolitan University and the University of Salford collaborate to offer Postgraduate Certificate, Diploma and MSc GIS courses by distance learning. 

The Curtin University, Australia offers a distance learning program in geographic information science which provides participants with an open and flexible means of studying the exciting and dynamic field of GIS.  The distance units are open to anyone within the GIS Graduate Diploma or Graduate Certificate programs or to someone who simply wants to learn some GIS and enrolls as an extension (external) student.
